Looking for drawing tablet hand writing recognition software.

^Topic^

A friend of mine is looking for software which can recognize hand writing that is being created on a drawing tablet and convert the letters to basic text(ASCII), like the software PDA's usually have. The software doesn't have to be limited to Windows, but it does need to be for a desktop OS, such as Linux, FreeBSD, etc.

Thanks for any input.

OCR software converts text from a printed page to editable text. Unless he writes prefect text, he is wanting something like Palm's graffiti software or something that will convert hand written characters to text.

I don't know of any. I know that MS will have improvements in this area in Vista though.

I'm going to assume a Mac app won't help him but just incase this is built into Mac OS X. plug in a tablet and it activates inkwell which does what you're looking for.

When I was looking for OCR software last week several of the programs made it a point that they would convert handwriting and diagrams.
Granted I don't know how 'well' they'd do the job but they stated they could do it.
Since this is a free program why not try it?

I never knew OCR software could do that, so I'll check it out. The thing is I don't think the software will give that great of results.

I don't suppose that InkWell or Palm Graffiti software is available seperately?
