Where are the USB drivers?
This is a problem I've came across with a number of brand name computers.
A few days ago I purchased a hard drive for my brothers Dell Dimension 3000 PC as the old hard drive in it was not up to the audio/video work he wished to do. After installing WindowsXP on his new hard drive I noticed in System/Hardware that a number of device drivers had not installed. After visiting the excellent Dell website I downloaded every single driver available for his Dell machine and installed them all. Now the problem is, after installing ALL the available drivers from Dells website, the USB driver was showing up as not having it's driver installed. The only way I got round this problem was hooking up his old hard drive as the slave and getting Windows to search that drive for the driver.....which it duly found and installed. My dads Compaq PC still has it's USB 2.0 driver uninstalled because I can't find it ANYWHERE. Now the question is, when I go looking for a USB 2.0 driver for a particular machine, what am I looking for because I can never find them on manufacturers websites? I thought they'd be in the chipset driver but not from what I've discovered so far. TIA. Colin.

The USB 2.0 drivers are installed when you update WinXP with SP1 or SP2. Not sure how it works with a Compaq though.

That's the first thing I done after installing WindowsXP....I installed SP2. The USB driver came up as not having it's driver installed. This applies also to my Dads Compaq which also has SP2 installed. |

Go here for USB drivers for Compaq and Dell : http://www.usb-drivers.com/
As a thought, have you just clicked on the USB in Device Manager and told it to "up date driver"?

I'm asking this question because it seems to be a common problem to me and I'm curious as to the best solution. Thanks for the website link, I'll have a look. Colin. |

The common solution is open the flagged or unknown USB controller (it's either in USB devices and flagged, or in "other devices") and tell it to update driver, uncheck all the boxes for locations to search, and it will find it and install it. You will then have a USB 2.0 or "enhanced" controller in the list. This almost ALWAYS happens when you install XP with no service packs - just installing the service pack after the fact will NOT automatically update the driver for you.
