For a workstation, I usually like Retrospect the best. For servers I prefer Veritas Backup Exec mostly because it has a 'nix agent.

For simple file-copy backup on Windows, just use NTBackup... it's already installed.

Start > Accessories > System Tools > Backup

When I ran Windows on my home computer, I had a process which would run every morning at 4AM and back up my "My Documents" folder to another drive.

NtBackup is only installed by default on XP Pro, but it is on the XP Home disk in the 'valueadd' folder 'Microsoft'

It can not back up directly to an optical drive, but you can always burn the file once it is prepared.

You would have to read the licensing agreement when you install it - that's the thing that everyone just clicks on "I Agree" without reading. I doubt that you legally can - but I don't know for certain.

online backup

Please try IBackup, an online backup provider which gives you free backup softwares. Since this is online backup, you only pay for the backup space. They have multiple backup softwares depending on your need and requirements and these are given free.
