DVD software
I formatted my Dell Dimension 5150 computer, and gradually got all the drivers that I needed, but my DVD's won't play. It tells me that I need a decoder or something. I guess I lost it with the format. I have posted a message on the Dell forum site asking for a link to the software that was originally on my computer, but in the meantime is there maybe a better free decoder that is recommended. I think I had POWER DVD on my machine that I lost.

Wait on the reply, you may get what you need from them. If not here is a really cheap PowerDVD software player : http://store.yahoo.com/5dollarsoftware/cypo5.html

In addtion to a DVD decoder, it has DivX, Xvid, a bunch of other codecs, and QuickTime and Real Alternatives.

Hi thefultonhow, I tried two of the codecs on the left and it does not work. Do I need a special one to work with Windows Media Player ? Which do you recommend ?

That PowerDVd is likely be on one of the resource CDs That came with the machine, if Dell even shipped any with your machine. They have been cutting back on shipping CDs.

That is the problem, no dics came with the machine except Word Perfect. I can't believe Dell and other companies create bad feelings with their customers just to save about 25 cents on a few CD's.
I tried that K-Lite codec that thefultohow recommended but it did not work last night. Will try again later. |

All Dell is going to tell you to do is use the restore system.

You often have to choose Custom Setup for the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack and tell it explicitly to install the DVD decoder.
