Software or hardware Problem?

Recently the response time of my computer has been slow when working in “MS Works Word Processor“. When I click on "Tools" then "Thesaurus" it takes @ 5 seconds for the computer to respond even though MS Word is the only task working.

In checking Windows Task Manager I find 29 processes working & yet the "System Idle Process" CPU is 98%, indicating the cpu is basically idle.

I noticed that there are six programs with the title sychost.exe, three are designated "System", two are "Network Service", & one is "Local Service".

Is this normal?

So I did a regedit: Hkey_Local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/current version/Run then highlighted Run which shows there are 12 folders under the Data header. Four are C:\Program, five are C:\Windows, one is C:\HP\KBD, one is logi_ MwX.Exe, & one is (value not set).

So I went to the Security , instead of windows , & under the header Name ab default, under Type REG_SZ, under Data (value not set)

My connection to the internet is thru a Westell 610014-03 Rev C modem.

My Anti-virus is NOD32 & the malware/anti-spyware is EWIDO & MS all of which are run weekly & to date there have been no problems.

I usually run FireFox browser unless the site only accepts IE.

Help

Multiple svchost processes is normal. If you want to check the programs running at StartUp, Start>run: msconfig>Startup tab. Compare those running to the link below and see if they are required, optional or unneeded. Couple other maintenance items to do weekly is run Disk Cleanup (inlcuding deleting all old restore points in the More Options tab - if your system is running fine you won't need these) and Disk Defragmenter.

PR, appreciate the quick response.

Will check that link out after I run some errands & do some honey-do's.

I clean the temp files 2-3 times a week & according to "Disk Frag" I do not need to run such sincethere will be no improvement.

Hopefully that link has the answer.

Have a good one.

Panama Red,

Tried the link & according to them there may be two possible troubles.

ps2

ct

So ran Registry Mechanic & there are 151 problems in "all sections".

The most offenders are classified "medium" & they are:

23 delfiles C:\windows\inf\S3gama. ?nf
25 delfiles C:\windows\inf\S3swtch2. ?nf
21 delfiles C:\windows\system\32\S3swtch2. vxd

There are no highs & the rest are lows.

What now?

Thanks

Do an online scan at Ewido.net and see what it finds. Eliminate all that it finds.

Thanks for the response.

Did an Ewido & MS scan twice, that is what makes this problem annoying.

What about the 69 "medium" faults, posted earlier, that were detected by Registry Mech?

Thanks

I don't use Registry Mechanic so I can't tell you if those items are something to get concerned about or not. Is the slow response only with the one program or do you see other slow to respond issues?

Panama Red,

There are times on-line when there is a 2-3 second lag waiting for the hd to spin up, but the problem is twice as bad in MS works.

The computer acts like it is having to wake up the hard after it has worked a 24 hour day

Thanks,

Do you have turn off hard disks enabled in your power options? I recommend you set everything to "never" except the monitor.

GLC,

Excellent suggestion!

Under "Power Options" found:

"Turn off hard disks" was set to 3 minutes. Changed to 10 minutes.

Thanks, I thinking that will resolve the problem.

Panama Red,

Did another scan at "HouseCall" before seeing GLC's recommendation.

http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

"Scanning and Cleaning Complete."

"HouseCall did not find any potential threats on your computer. Make sure you run HouseCall once a week to keep your PC clean and malware free."

Also "Shields Up" gave me sleuth status on my ports.

Appreciate the help fellows!
