Switching to FireFox as your internet browser will help keep spyware/malware at bay...

Adaware, Spybot S&D, TweakNow RegCleaner, and Spyware Blaster are good, free programs for regular maintanance...

Trend Micro PC Cillin is a good program - lots of bells and whistles...

It may be a free trial though, since it came with your pc - if/when it exprires, should you choose not to resubscribe, AVG has a very good, free antivirus software...

Pay-for programs I use are Webroot's Window Washer and Spy Sweeper, as well as Executive Software's Disk keeper, for defragmenting.... Does the job and do it well IMO...

Keep in mind that it helps to frequently use the disk clean-up utility under Programs>Accessories>System Tools. The disk defragmenter can also be found under here, which should be ran atleast once every 6 months.

Hi

A few ways to keep things clean:
1) Use the Firefox browser. IE is responsible for a lot of spyware.
2) Avoid P2P programs.
3) Make sure you defrag the hard disk weekly/
4) And the BEST way to ensure your laptop is clean is to create a snapshot image of it with either Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost.

You should be able to go to the control panel and uninstall them, AOL does not always completly go away as you'll find an occasional AOL folder later, but these can then just be deleted once the parent programs are gone.
