converting scanned images

Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a software that can take a scanned image of a document and convert it to an editable document. Is there such? Any help or recommendations appreciated.

You are going to need some kind of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. It may have come with your scanner; otherwise, I think you are going to have to buy something. I don't know of any free OCR software out there.

Thanks doctorgonzo! I don't mind buying the software, I didn't know if there was one. Any recommendations on OCR software?

Two good ones are ABBYY Finereader and Omnipage.

Depending on the maker of your scanner, it should come with some rudimentary form of OCR software.

Thanks pillainp, that's what I need. This office machine doesn't have it built in and they want around $4000 to add the feature which is way out of budget.

You could also give SimpleOCR a try. The makers claim it is completely freeware, and just as good as the paid ones.

Let me know how it goes.

Also if you are running MS Office XP/2003, you will find a "Microsoft Office Document Scanning" and "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" in the Tools folder in the Microsoft Office folder in your start menu.

I personally use ABBYY Finereader Pro 8, and I can vouch for the quality of its OCR engine.

OCR is kind of iffy, but it's what you have to deal with. Sometimes you get fairly decent translations. Sometimes it winds up looking like Vietnamese...
