Registry Clean-up
Just wondering if anyone out there has much experience with registry cleanup utilities, eg. Registry Mechanic - how necessary are they? Does one ask for problems using such utilities? Any recommendations as to good-better-best?
Thanks for any input. |

I personally never use them nor recommend them. I see absolutely no need for them, but if the utility in question has a good reputation and makes backups of everything it changes, you can try it.

I've used Registry Healer for several years and it works good for me. It's not free, unlike the one that glc has been recommending. He recommends CCleaner.

Thanks for the input. I saw CCleaner as a trial download from PC World website. I am starting to experience slower boots, and I know there's probably a bunch of garbage in the registry, but I'm a little leery of messing with it.
Do you guys reformat periodically to achieve the same effect? TA |

I re-format twice a year just to keep things humming along. The only time I ever used a registry cleaner it removed something that caused many problems and I needed to nuke & pave.

I never reformat unless a hard drive fails. Just doing regular maintenance to keep things cleaned out is all I find necessary. All but one of my pc's is running on the original Windows install. Those are XP Home, XP Pro, and 2000 Pro.

I've been using the CCleaner Registry cleanup tool for about half a year and haven't had any problems with it.
I just ran it on a friend's computer that was opening programs a little sluggishly and now the computer is running a little snappier. Cricket

I use CCleaner. It works and its great. I've only reformatted once when I was having some boot problems.

I just downloaded ccleaner this morning and ran it on two of my own systems as well as a customer computer. It works excellent, has a provision for backing up the registry before any changes are made and prompts you on just about every step before deleting anything.
All systems are running much nicer as a result. I highly recommend it. -Kev
