Question Can Ripping a DVD ruin the DVD?

First, I want you to know that I am not ripping the DVDs to keep or sell. I don't even have a DVD burner. I am trying to watch all the 24 tv series season on DVD. The first 2 disk that I rented I ripped them to my HD to watch later (my work schedule keeps me from watching it with the rest of the family) and sent the disk back.

I didn't try to play the third disk before I tried to rip it. So I don't know if it was working before the rip attempt or not. All I got when I tried to rip it was a lot of errors. So I was just going to watch it from the DVD. But the DVD just loads to the FBI warning screen and stops. The Only player that I could get to play it was VLC media player.

DVD decrypter is the software that I used to attempt to rip the dvd with.

So my question is could the decryption attempt have hurt the disk so how? Sorry if thats a stupid question. But I'd like to know before I send the disk back. Thanks

Nope. Reading a CD or DVD does not damage the disc. The laser does not touch the disc at all, so the disc can't be worn out.

If you get errors, the disc is scratched or there is a copy protection like ARccOS (some sectors are intentionally damaged), or even something newer than ARccOS (Decrypter can only handle CCS and ARccOS, for DVDs with newer copy protection you need different software to rip it successfully).

Ive used both the dvd decryptor and the slysoft product that pam suggested, and the slysoft product is SOOO much better. They also make clone dvd which is the product that will copy the movie, it is also a GREAT product.

Ah. Thats what I thought. So the disk is already either damaged in some way or defective. Because it will not even play in a regular dvd player connected to my television. After trying to read the disk, that DVD player displays "no disk".

It will only play on my pc using VLC player. So at least we can still watch it. And I'll try Anydvd in the morning when I get home from this graveyard shift.

Thanks guys.
