File recovery

I accidently deleted files from my external WD drive when transfering the contents of my C: drive to it.

I thought it was adding the files, not deleting everything on the drive then transfering.

I tried using a program to get them back but no dice. If anyone coudl tell me what the best program to recover these files I would be eternally grateful, as there we years of pictures of friends, family, kids, etc.

Thank you,

There's a good, free (shareware) program called Directory Snoop, which I've found to be very good.

If you haven't over written anything this program works and it has a trial version : http://www.recovermyfiles.com/

The gold standard is set by these guys : http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/
This is thier "view" program and trial version.

In either case you'll know if they can do the job before you shell out any cash.

PC Inspector is free, I'd try that first.

If that doesn't do it, then the 2 commercial programs that seem to work the best are GetDataBack and Ontrack Easy Recovery.

Thank you for all the advice.

I tried a few programs and while they could see the files they did not recover them. However, I did get the files back

First, I am an idiot. I was able to go into the recycle bin on C: and get the files on F: that way.

Luckily, the files that I could not recover from the recycle bin were also on another computer. So I brought my external drive over to that computer(office) and was able to get (what appears to be) all the files!!!

Everything is now back on the external.

Thank you, thank you thank you!
