Help with Power Connectors

I am in the process of helping a friend replace a faulty power supply. He has a Intel motherboard but doesn't know the model number. His CPU is an Intel 3.4GHz.
The old power supply has a 24 pin ATX power connector (actually a 20 pin connector and a 4 pin connector hooked together) and plugged into the 24 pin connector slot. Additionally there is a separate cable with a 4 pin connector which was plugged into a separate 4 pin slot.
The new power supply has the same 24 pin combination but not a separate 4 pin connector cable. There is a 4 pin connector cable coming off the 24 pin connector. Problem is this 4 pin connector is not long enough to reach to the 4 pin plug. Is it necessary to have this 4 pin connector be plugged into the 4 pin slot if you have the 24 pin cable connected? Secondly, if it is required is an extension cable (Newegg has them) the best and/or only solution?
Thanks

You want to have the same power connections that the old PSU did(the 24 pin and the extra 4 pin). Sounds like you don't have a direct replacement style PSU.
