Wmp 11

My friend wanted to try Windows Media Player 11. So I installed it on his box.

He didn't like it. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled 10.

Then he did a system restore (this is his solution to everything, restoring to a previously faulty point). So 11 came back.

?

So then he's crying again. Okay, I'll fix it again.

Now, in Add/Remove, when I go to remove it, it says it has done a "rollback" and that it is done. Then the entry stays there....so then, whether I restart or not first, when I go remove the Windows Media Player 11 hotfix, it says it can't do it because WMP is still there.

No matter what I've thought of, I can't get 10 re-re-installed and I am tired to death of this.

BTW, this is an XP Home machine, and - something I can't help but be suspicious of as he has numerous problems, there is a recovery partition in place as a D drive on the master (C) drive. Also, he has this program backing up everything to an external drive he has. So I wonder if all this redundancy is possibly having a negative effect.

no, the recovery partition does nothing but just sit there. it has an image of the pc when it was built with the OS and and all programs installed, unless you restore from that partition, its never used.

no its good that he is backing things up to an external drive, that way if his hard drive fails he wont lose anything.

follow these instructions
1.In Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.

2.Click Remove a program, and then, at the top of the list, select the Show updates check box.

3.In the Windows Updates section, click Windows Media Player 11, and then click Change/Remove.

4.If prompted, restart your computer, and then log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

5.In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.

6.In the Windows Updates section, click Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, and then click Change/Remove.

7.If prompted, restart your computer, and then log on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

8.In Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program.

9.Click Microsoft User-Mode Driver Frameworks Feature Pack 1.0, and then click Change/Remove.

Thank you Ob1, but step 5 is where the process breaks down. When I try to uninstall the runtime, I am told it's a no-go because Windows Media Player is running on the system. This even after I have uninstalled it.

BTW, my runtime entry is not in the updates section, but in the regular add/remove section. There were also entries for it (WMP 11) in the updates section as well as the regular section, but now they are gone. In case it helps I'll see about getting a pic up.

have you tried reinstalling wmp11, and then uninstalling it after a reboot to see if that removes all of it?

I even yelled at it, and still wouldn't go.

what happens if you try to install wmp 10? does it error out stating a new version is already installed?

try running this:
start>run>sfc /scannow - need xp disc for this

have you tried running a windows repair by booting to the xp disc?

It states a newer version is installed.

Funny you should bring up scannow because I was reading a thread here earlier and thought I should try it. I was waiting for one of the experts to tell me to do it. This whole episode reaks of a registry problem to me, which was why I was leary of all his back up stuff (two backups of the system) which I uneducatedly thought might be causing confusion for the registry.

I'll ask him for his install disk when I see him tomorrow...or maybe I'll go to that page that was linked to in the other discussion that explains which reg entry to change to get scannow to use the I386 that's already on the disk. I'll get back to you, thanks.

So - I ran scannow. It ran, then nothing. I restarted. I pulled up Add/Remove, removed WMP11 once again. Then tried the runtime rollback. Got this dialogue, same as before.

Microsoft has already pushed back the date of WMP 11 due to what they're calling "quality" issues in the release : http://www.betanews.com/article/Wind...yed/1161803423
