Acronis Backup ?
Hi:
I backed up a 20 gb hard drive (windows 98) and then the hard drive failed. Now what I wonder is if I can restore to a larger hard drive (160 gb)? Or do I have to restore to the same size hard drive? I suppose that the hard drive would need to formated to the fat 32 file system in order to restore windows 98? Thanks for any replys. |

If you don't have the manual download it from here : http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing.../features.html
First, did you clone the entire hard drive or did you just back up certain files ( I can't tell from your post)? If it's just the files then it doesn't matter but if it's the entire drive then you may have a problem with FAT 32 and a 160 GB drive. Under restore in the manual they give you several options but I'm thinking, if you cloned the entire install, that you will need to partition the new hard drive to avoid problems as well as using FAT 32 format.

Don't make your life any more complicated then necessary.
XP in NTFS will read FAT 32 format with no trouble, it doesn't work the other way around though. Providing your motherboard recognizes a 160 GB drive, check in the bios, just format the new drive in NTFS and install the proper programs then transfer your data to it from the back up. When you go through the manual pay attention to transfering settings so you can get them back to work with the data. The Acronis manual has a section on using the software to set up new computers.
