Software for hiding folders?
I'm wondering if there are any free, low cost programs out there which will actually hide folders?
If you have pertinent information that you want to have located on your hard drive, but not allow your kids to see? Or the ability so that "if" someone where to get behind your firewall, that this info would be hidden to them as well (password needed?) These days there can be alot of info (personal) that we would like to have saved, yet realize the vulnerability of computers, so having it somewhat more secure, (such as having folders hidden) might be the answer for some users. Just thought there might be some good applications out there for this purpose? Thanks.. PSD2000

Here's one of many:
Hide Folders is a security utility that hides your folders out from prying eyes. You can select up to 2 folders, that you wish to hide and click the hide button to make them invisible. Hide Folders works in the stealth mode, once your folders are hidden doesn t have to be running in order to keep the folders hidden. A Pro version is also available, that allows you to hide more than two folders and offers additional password protection. This free version however works great, if you need to casually hide some data from being accessed or accidentally modified or deleted. To unhide the folders, simply run the program and select to do so. http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Hid...defolders.html

Thanks for the tip! I gave it a try (downloaded the files) and upon clicking on "setup", I got an error message saying it doesn't run on Windows NT.
Well, I have Windows XP (not NT) so I will assume this product won't run on WinXP? Thanks.. |

if you have xp pro then you can set file/folder permissions to restrict access to folders so no prying eyes can see in if they dont have right permissions. BUT BE CAREFUL when setting those file and folder permissison as the wrong check mark for permissions can lock you out of your own information.....
if you have folders that are shared out on the network you can place a $ at the end of the filename to make the share folder invisible on the network. so if some were to browse to your pc and click on your computer to see what you have shared they wouldnt see that hidden folder. this only works for shared folders, if they were on the local machine that was sharing the folder it would show up as foldername$

I use Folder Lock, available from www.newsoftwares.net
Various levels of encryption, hide unlimited folders/files from common browsing-thru-the-computer and from search function. I think it's $35 dollars now. I forgot my password once...I forget what I did, but I think I remember it involved me moving the HDD to another machine to recover the data. It was long ago, that might have been a different issue. Also, the interface is shiny and translucent.
