Windows XP is freezing on virus/spyware scans

My computer has recently started behaving rather oddly. It freezes during the following virus scans.

TrendMicro
Avast! AntiVirus
Spybot S&D

When they get to the middle of the scan..the computer just freezes...

Running CWShredder i found - CWS.Hiddendll

I've checked my registry..and there aren't any odd programs starting up in the beginning...just...
D-Link wireless drivers, Avast, and Zone alarm.

When i check the event viewer i have this message at the time of the freeze

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its internal processing. HRESULT was C0000005 from line 44 of d:\qxp_slp\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cpp.

This is on Windows XP SP2

Any idea of what could be wrong with my computer?

Try running your scans in safe mode.

Have you tried the online Ewido malware scan?

Thats a unusual problem. Sounds as if the virus (if you have one) has corrupted something. Have you tried using adaware? What kind of freeze do you mean? Is it a BSOD or a program freeze or a total system freeze? If nothing else you can try a bootable virus scanner or redo your hard drive.

Sure did. I downloaded and tried it out last night. and still got a complete system freeze. I haven't tried it in safe mode yet with Ewido yet.

It's a total system freeze and that's probably my next step is a boot scan..like before the computer full starts it does an adware scan.

Also i've been able to run and scan with Ad-Aware fully and it only detected 10 tracking cookies.

One of the following may fix it:

If you have MSN Messenger, take it out of your startup.

Reinstall .NET Framework

Uninstall Quicktime

MSN is out of my startup, I reinstalled .net framework, and i uninstalled quicktime.

I ran a scan of Ewido and got a freeze there, ran a spybot iin both normal and safe modes of windows xp and i'm still receiving freezes...

The event viewer gave me the same COM+ error message and now i've noticed this one about the bonjour service

The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( Bonjour Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: mDNSResponder started

I don't have the blaster virus because i don't find anything in my processes or in the registry edit...

At this point I would recommend that you do a "repair" install of Windows XP and see if that helps your problem.

Reinstall Quicktime. That's an iTunes service and iTunes needs Quicktime.

...so now i discover that not only does my computer freeze in safe mode. It freezes when i put in my windows xp CD to do a Windows Repair. Or as a matter of fact...any OPTION i choose...i can't reformat...it FREEZES just as SOON as i hit the button.

Maybe i should try the floppy disk ASR (Automated System Recovery)? I don't know this is getting moronic and shouldn't be doing crap like this!

Maybe it's the hard drive? Maybe the hard drive is failing? There's 2Gigs left on it and it's an 80 gig drive that we've had for about....::thinks:: 5-6 years or so? This is probably the ONLY thing i can come up with. I've reformatted this computer before and it was doing odd bsod's

So what do you guys think? Fragged hard drive? I can still log onto the hard drive..it's not freezing now. It only freezes on Virus/Spyware/ Scans, and now apparently Youtube.

Only 2 gigs free on a 80 gig drive? It's way too full and probably corrupted to heck. You need to delete about 15 gigs of crap, run chkdsk /r, then see where you stand.

Did the checkdisk...and for some reason it restarted..i did the other Error disk check and it ran successfully.

glc..i think i'm going to chalk this one up to hardware failure...this computer a month or two ago would lose the connection to the master drive and i'd have to go into the BIOS and get the mobo to recognize the master drive. But that actually stopped and everything was running fine. Than this of course started to happen heh. It also wouldn't recognize a slave drive i tried to put in there -.-;.

So...it's either the IDE cables or the actual mobo itself is corrupted...

(Also i was checking around google and people also had problems with their Windows XP Setup at boot. And it turns out that Linux sometimes has a leftover boot record in there and would mess that up. I've never installed Linux...so...it just has to be the hardware.)
