Registry Cleaner

I'm running Windows XP Home with all the updates. Lately I've been getting a lot of "Dr. Watson" errors - especially in Outlook Express - which causes Outlook Express to shutdown. I know "Dr. Watson" is built into Windows XP but don't really understand how it works or what it does. But, I never used to get those error messages until recently. I Googled it and that led me to"RegCure" - a free registry cleaner software that they say will fix "Dr. Watson" error messages. So, before I download anything I thought I'd ask here - which should I use? - "RegCure" ? - "Max Secure Reistry Cleaner" which was the highest rating in a registry cleaner review article? - or "CC Cleaner" which has been mentioned in this forum? And help me understand the following too will you? The web sites of all three of these say "the download is free". But they seem awfully anxious to get me to download it. What's the deal there. Whether it's free or not is not critical to me. I don't mind paying for something if it works and helps my computer run good. Any advice would be appreciated. Cliff

I cant speak for the other pieces of software you mention but CCleaner is totally free and at no point will you need to pay for it. That said it is a very good piece of software. Download it and give it a whirl before you do anything else, it might just do the trick.

Free

I use ERUNT to have a safe registry backup. Eusing Free Registry Cleaner & RegScrubXP seem to do a good job & have a restore feature I've never needed. Les

don't shoot the messenger...

Here's what Dr. Watson does : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308538
Go look in Event Viewer for the same times that it popped up and check what it says the error was.
If it's Outlook Express you have to repair follow the instructions here : http://support.microsoft.com/default...23120121120120
Also run a malware scan.
CoolWebSearch is notorious for popping up Dr. Watson errors which can be the only things that give it away once it's on your machine.

Only when you're sure there is no other reason do you go after Dr.Watson.
