Music dissappeared from iTunes!!

Hello, I just opened itunes and i see that there is no music in it! I have about 2000 songs and most are rated etc....all the files are on my ipod....what can i do?

Update: I enabled hidden folders and grabbed all the music off my ipod and put it into my library...its not the files im worried about, its the ratings and playcounts. When i dragged it from my ipod, the ratings and playcounts didn't get grabbed

Did you create a new Windows user account? If so, you still have everything.........in the old account profile.

No, I did not...i don't have any clue as to why this happened...there is no reason for this to have happened, unless someone touched my comp over the weekend

Could the solution be in an old itunes library file somewhere? will that be on my ipod? AM I SCREWED!

OK here are two threads with the same/similar "disappearing music" surprise :

http://discussions.apple.com/thread....3110&tstart=15
http://discussions.apple.com/thread....3540&tstart=15

It's essentially glc's solution in a little more detail and it's known to work.

i recently had my itunes do the same thing , the songs were there but itunes had no idea where the path to them was , wiped the library and added my music folder to the library . doing what apple recommended is fine if you haven't added any songs since you upgraded .

do you know were your music files are located ?

Ok thank you Pam, that was actually very helpful. It helped me understand how itunes libraries work. I have a back up my music onto dvds from Sept 12 2006. It saves the library file aswell. Some stuff is there, but alot of it is changed...its a nightmare trying to get everything in proper order...grrr... i still have questions. Does the whole itunes library rely on this one file: the itunes music database file? If this file is removed, does itunes lose all track of the music? Are all the ratings and plays in this file? Does it get stored on my ipod? thanks pam and glc for quick responses...i am dying

Update: I think im just going to start fresh...and re-rate my songs...its too much work trying to figureout whats there and what isn't...

If you buy copypod then it saves ratings and play counts.
