Start-up issue
Ok,this sucks. I was just helping a pal install a new fan. Here is what happened.
-Attempted to install fan (suceeded, just a basic 80mm using a molex connector) -Computer is suddenly extremely slow booting up after fan installation (ie, stalls at the BIOS screen, stalls right after the WinXP loading screen) -HDD is powered and spinning and is fully connected to the motherboard via SATA cable/power cable -System spec: Seagate barracuda 7200.9 80g HDD AMD athlon 64 3500+ Kingston 512mb RAM Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G Motherboard -Computer recently purchased, parts brand new Please tell me that it is entirely fixable or that I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thanks in advance!

If you unplug the fan does it return to normal?

Negative. Still stays the same. It just seems so odd...the fan installation and windows loading issues aren't connected at all so far as I can tell. But how does that explain it conking out after I went in there?

Have you gone back in there and reseated all your connectors and cards? You may have jarred something loose.

Well, unless I missed something, no. I tried reseating everything that could be reseated. There is a load of room because there are no expansion cards to deal with...
What is a slow bootup often associated with? |

Overheating or a failing hard drive.

Yeah thats what I thought...
Well I suppose I can try it again today. I guess if it has cooled down then it should work fine and needs relocation, and if it doesn't...time to call in that warranty. |

You should run diagnostics on your hard drive.

Roger that. Suppose that overheating wasn't the issue and the HDD reads fine...

All of the components in there are necessary for it to run though. It is very much a barebones system.

What will that accomplish though?
PS, Ran a virus check using Norton, Kaspersky and AVG...turned up nothing. I attempted to use SeaTools, but once I got into the program the mouse/keyboard stopped working. I'll try it again today with a PS/2 setup (the other one was USB). After the long bootup, windows runs as normal. |

Update:
Computer starts as normal now, for no apparent reason. No connections were checked after I last mentioned it, malware scans still turned up nothing, SeaTools worked, found nothing wrong with the HDD. So I guess that means I was in the wrong place at the wrong time the first time round, then the right place/ right time. KNowing that I won't really accep that answer I'm still gonna look into it to try and find out what happened. Any input would be greatly appreciated. |
