Calling all LG optical drive owners
Hey folks,
The firmware updater for my LG optical drive is the source of today's question. That icon in the notification area that shows the drive with a little blue disc on it has this game that it plays. It will flash between blue and green, or in today's case, blue and bright red. I assumed that it wanted me to update the firmware, but when I went ahead to do that, it didn't list any updates for me. It does this with or without a CD in the drive. Anyone have any idea what kind of color coding is going on here and if it is important?

I'd ignore it and do what you have to do to stop it from running in the background. As far as firmware updates go, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I don't think its broken or anything...I just wanna know what the colors mean. Aside from that, it is a startup object, and I am afraid that shutting it down might "broke" it.

Get rid of it in the startup. If you let everything run in the startup that installs when you install stuff you will choke the computer to death. There's not an optical drive in the world that requires a firmware monitor running in the background to function properly.

Only problem is that when I dive into msconfig to change it up, it won't let me change anything without being the administrator...which I am.

Boot it into safe mode and log in as THE administrator.

*bump
Hey all, In my late night perusing of the forums, I almost forgot to ask: Is there any other way to log in to Windows XP in Safe Mode aside from pressing F8 on startup? I did that the first time, and the only option I was given was regarding boot priority. I'm trying to eliminate some startup stuff, but my box is giving me a hard time about it. Thanks for the help, it is much appreciated. |

You are pressing F8 too soon. You need to catch it just before the XP crawl screen appears.
XP Home or XP Pro? |

XP MCE...which I think is equivalent to Pro...
I'll give it another try before I go to bed. Which won't be for a few hours. |

The built-in Administrator account is hidden from Welcome Screen when a user account with Administrator privileges exists and enabled. In Windows XP Home Edition, you can login as built-in Administrator in Safe Mode only. For XP Professional, press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice at the Welcome Screen and input your Administrator password in the classic logon window that appears.

Ok, excellent...I was wondering if I really was an admin on this PC for a second there.

You may be in the admin group, but sometimes you have to log in as THE administrator to do certain things. However, something isn't exactly right if you can't use msconfig.
