Dear Friends,
I have a very peculiar requirement. My mail has got hundreds of mails with various topics. Many times even after I have created various folders to keep specific mails in respctive mail folders, I found it difficult to search for a single mail which I need. I would be knowing the name of the person or the topic in the mail or few words in the content. But it takes lots of time to seach that particular mail if it was recived little earlier. I want to know is there any e-mail serch tool where I can search and pin the mail using search keyword -may be the senders address or name or a word in the content of the mail. It is really a wierd idea. But any help?? Regards, Srinath India |

No, it's not a wierd idea. Google sort of introduced the idea of having a search function for one's email, to the point where one would not need to file their emails anymore, just institute a search for the one one is looking for. Yahoo followed suit, which made me happy since I have been using Yahoo Mail since 2002.
Which email setup do you have? And what do you mean by contest search?

If you are using Microsoft Outlook there is a tool called Lookout. I originally got it at www.looksoft.com but no wthat goes directly to microsoft.com. I guess they gobbled up another one. You can get it here.

Dear TimPoet,
I am extremely sorry for the spelling mistake. It is 'Content search' not 'contest search'. Right now I am using gmail, rediffmail and yahoo. How to activate this search facility in my gmail? (As you mentioned that this facility is available with Google). Is this is a speicific facility given to a mail service provider or can we search in any other mail also? Please guide me. regards, Srinath T K India |

Well, here in the States, Gmail and Yahoo both have great search functions. It's very simple, really. There is a search box where you enter your search terms and all. I suspect that your version of email lacks this function. Do you see a search box on your email screen?
I know nothing of rediffmail. If you have the function in your email program, you would simply enter the name of the person or the topic of the email message or a few words of the content and it will pull up those email messages.... Quote:
EDIT: Re: rediffmail, is that an online service like Gmail or an application that works within your computer system? If it's within your system did you try sgt's suggested downloadable program? Tell you what- can you take a screenshot of your Gmail email page and private message it to me (I suggest you don't attach it to a public message here in case it has your full name printed in it, in case you'd rather remain private about that stuff), so I can see if you have search functions? That is, if you're having a hard time discerning search functions on it. You can use IrfanView as the program to copy the screenshot to. http://www.irfanview.net/ Now, you know, I've been talking in this post assuming that Google is different in different countries and that Gmail is also different. It just occurred to me that this may not be so, that Gmail may be the same worldwide. If so, then the more's the merrier... or something like that. Good luck! Dear TimPoet,
You are really of great help. Yes, as you guided, my Gmail and Yahoo both has the mail search functionality. I never thought that this is a facility given by mail service providers. Thanks for the help. Secondly my major quantity of my mails are in Rediffmail.com which is hosted by Indian company. Very unfortunately, I did not find any searchability in the mail. That is one of the major drawback of this service. This rediffmail is not a resident to local pc but a regular service like Gmail. Is there any way I can search the mails from my local PC using some software? Regards, Srinath India |

I am not aware of any such programs, srinathtk. But that means little, pehaps some other member will make a suggestion. But I am thinking that you can import these emails to your computer's hard drive, look for their "export" feature, and conduct searches there.
Perhaps you can import them to Outlook Express to sort them out. |

I think TimPoet has the right idea.
If you can export the email to your PC you can use Google Desktop : http://desktop.google.com/features.html to do the search even though it's not gmail.
