MemTest won't open

After I downloaded MemTest, I click on the "install" folder (want to copy to a floppy), but all I get is a millisecond black flash on my screen. Looks like maybe some white letters on the black.

I got it here: http://www.memtest.org/

Make sure to download the "Pre-compiled Package for Floppy"; it's the last link for the latest version. When you have it, unzip the folder and open up the "Floppy" folder. Click on the install.bat file and follow the instructions.

That worked. Thank you.

Now, I don't see one for a bootable CD to use.

The one to create a bootable CD is the 'Pre-compiled bootable ISO (.zip)'

Extract the ISO and burn the image to a CD.

I use Memtest on a CD as part of the Ultimate Boot CD, Sarge (www.ultimatebootcd.com). It has loads of other useful stuff on it.

Ok. I downloaded the Ultimate CD to desktop. When I click the icon to open, a box shows up with "7-Zip self-extract archive". When I click the extract button, I get a msg saying, "ubcd34-full.exe is not a supported archive".

Download the zip, not the exe. There's an iso inside the zip, extract it with XP's compressed folders or whatever unzipping software you have. Fire up your CD burning software and create a CD from an image, the iso is the image.

glc, I downloaded the correct one after reading your post. I used Win Zip and even XP to extract the stuff, then tried to open and it says "windows can't open this file. Needs to know what program created it". I burned the image to a CD, tried to open that and it says same thing.

You do not use Windows to open the iso - just extract it from the zip file and put it somewhere. You use the CD burning software to open it. With Nero Express, it's create CD from image or saved project, then browse to the iso.

Just to add, after burning to the iso to the CD restart your comp and have it boot off the drive (just as if you were installing windows). You then will be greeted with a screen and your different options.

I didn't know that part. Thanks. However I don't wish to pay for burning software when XP usually does the job. Cheaper to buy the Ultimate CD.

If you don't even have burning software, go get Deepburner. They have a free version and it works well, it's an all purpose burner, it does more than just burn isos.

Didn't your burner come with software?

Not that I recall and surprised me that it didn't.

Must have been OEM then. Retail burners come with software, not many OEM's do any more.

Thanks guys, you've been a huge help. Never dealt with ISOs before that I can remember.
