Discussion: What software would you load on a new machine?

Okay i usually build about 10 computers a year minimum for friends/family etc. i'm just curious as to what y'all would load up on a computer if you were to build it for the average user. myself, i have a certain selection of software i usually load up for everyone, here's my "usual" list:
  • Open Office
  • CCleaner
  • Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird
  • ExplorerXP (mainly for renaming lots of pictures or files at once)
  • AdAware from Lavasoft
  • Grisoft AVG Free/AVG Anti Spyware
  • Network Magic (if needed)
  • IE7 update for WinXP
  • WMP11 update for WinXP
  • Java VM
  • Adobe Reader

Anyone else have their own "list"? i'd like to see what other people might do, maybe give me some ideas on some good freeware/software that i'm missing out on.

Spybot is on my list and several on yours I would consider to be User Requested. I wouldn't put them on unless the customer specifically asked for something to solve a problem. Also add Power DVD and Nero to the list as they come with the drives I purchase (always Liteon).

Another step I take is to add a folder on the desktop called Weekly Maintenance. In the folder are short cuts to Adaware, Spybot, Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter. I also include my own Word Doc that explains how to run each program. I edit the registry to remove the Compress files option from Disk Cleanup and tweak the Services to shut down those that are unnecessary or create nuisance notifications (like Error Reporting).

I don't use CCleaner but in your case I would add it to the WM folder on the desktop. Also make sure to install Java and update it. XP needs a VM engine added.

This goes on ALL XP machines unless customer says otherwise:

CCleaner
Spyware Blaster
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware
AVG Free
AVG Antispyware in free crippled mode, not starting with Windows
Adobe Reader
Irfanview
Quicktime and Real Alternatives
Diskeeper Lite 9
Sun Java

Anything else is only installed after consultation. I do not push M$ alternatives but will install alternatives (FF/Opera, Tbird, Open Office, etc.) on request. Most of my customers have a comfort zone and prefer IE and OE or Office with Outlook. I do install IE7 on new builds only after consultation - some people hate the interface. If they don't want it, I install the blocking script so Windows Update won't bug them about it. Haven't done any Vista builds yet and am discouraging them at the present till the dust clears.

Yeah i always include Java. i forgot about it... just added to the list. as far as the Burning software goes i just get what's included with the drives, and i always get drives that include Nero.

and i like your tip about the "Weekly Maintenance" folder and the shortcuts... that's a great idea and i never thought about it. i think i'm gonna incorperate that into my routine now.... Thanks.

hey glc, what's so great about Infanview? i've seen it on some other people's machines but i'll be honest, the icon's bug the hell outta me lol. i guess it's a great image manager/viewer, correct?

Irfanview is a small, fast, versatile free image viewer/manager/basic editor. If you dig into the help files, you will be amazed at the things this little program can actually do.

I have taken Acrobat Reader off of my list because of it's annoying constant updates and it wanting to install everything from Yahoo toolbar to it's download manager. Foxit seems to be a better choice.
