Hey,
Every time I close iTunes I get an error saying that "An Error has occurred and iTunes needs to close, You may lose any unsaved information etc." Will I have to reinstall iTunes? That would be a pain in the butt because I have an 8000 song library and I can see it taking a long time to add all my songs again. Or is this a deeper problem as my Side bar keeps coming up with the same error but not when I close it, this happens when I log on. Any help is appreciated, YukonMaster |

It's not that much of a hassle.
Do the following: 1. If you have an iPod return it to manual mode from auto-sync and write down your iTunes account info. 2. Open your My Music folder and find the iTunes music files. Copy the folder to some place safe, a new folder on the desktop will do if that's all you can manage but a folder on a usb hard drive is preferable. You can use the export function in iTunes or just right click the whole thing, drag it and click copy when you reach the folder. Check to make sure you've got everything, that's your back up in case anything goes wrong. In theory uninstalling iTunes leaves your music intact and in practice that's usually the case but it can be time consuming and/or expensive should you turn out to be the exception. 3. Now go into your iTunes account and de-authorize the computer. This step isn't strictly necessary since you're allowed to have iTunes on 5 computers but people do lose track. Now uninstall iTunes and Quicktime. That done open Programs on the C drive, My Computer-right click the C drive and chose open, find anything that says Apple or Quicktime and delete it. Now run the registry cleaner of your choice, it can be regcleaner, it can be CCleaner (recommended around here) or any other you're familiar with. This is a clean uninstall of iTunes, you don't want to leave anything hanging around. Empty the recycle bin and dump your temp files, use Disk Clean UP in XP. You have now scrubbed iTunes from your system but your itunes music (on the desktop)in My Music should be intact. Now go update your system, run defragmenter and do all the housekeeping chores that keep a PC running well. You're doing your best to make sure there's nothing now running on your pc that would cause iTunes to error out when you close it. Now go download the latest stand alone version of Quicktime and the latest version of iTunes. I keep a folder in My Documents that I download all iTunes files into and you should do the same. That way if you ever need to scrub an update and go back to a previous install you can do so easily. Now, off line, disable your security software. Norton or McAfee, and some of the others, will stop iTunes cold and not even pop-up a window to warn you. You must add the new install to their white lists. Install the stand alone Quicktime first and make sure it's on the white list. Reboot, check again, and go find a few movie trailers. If Quicktime has no trouble then install iTunes. Remember what I said about white lists. If you've done it well it will connect to the iTunes store and you can go through all the steps of agreeing to the EULA and so forth. The last step, your music should all be there, chose a song and authorize the computer. At this point you can return your iPod, if you have one, to auto-synch since any music you have on it will be safe when synched with the iTunes library/play lists. You're back in business and you have a full back up of your music which, if it's on your desktop, you're moving to a usb drive as soon as possible. If you ever have to restore the whole iTunes folder all you have to do is drag and drop the whole thing back into My Music. Are there other ways to go about this? Yes, but this one is the safest and by far the most thorough.
