File copying to be burned problem, then DVD problem

I'm trying to back up all my files manually by burning them to a DVD. I have everything organized nicely in a folder. There's pictures, music, word documents, and a PDF. It's a brand new computer so there's only 808 MB in the folder.

So I put a blank DVD into the burner, right click on my "back up" folder, and select Send to-->DVD drive. The I get a prompt that says "windows is encountering problems copying files [insert word document or PDF]". It gives me an option to retry, skip, or cancel. I retry and it doesn't work.

*OK wait it just worked when I tried it again with out a DVD actually in the drive....Inserting DVD when prompted....What?! It says that my CD is not writeable, or is full. ?*

I know they're not full. OK can anyone enlighten me? Why would it have trouble copying my word documents to get burned? The pics seemed to go OK. Why won't my DVD's work?They're Philips DVD+R 4.7GB 120min 1-16X speed. My burner is an LG 8X DVD+RW, DVD+R DL, 16X DVD-ROM, 48X CD-ROM The one on sale on Newegg for $28.99.

Are you using Windows XP? If so the built in burning function only works for CDs. Only Vista supports built in DVD burning.

Do you have DVD burning software like Nero?

I was so pissed. I guess I thought that if it contained only music, pictures, and no mpeg it would work? Whatever.

Would DVD clone work for data files, or is it only movies?

Do I need the firmware for my burner? I burned a bunch of CD's today just fine.

Do you need/want a freeware -data only- app for you burner or something more 'heavy-duty'?

Not if DVD clone will do it just fine. Although I will have to eventually buy those programs, so I guess a good freeware DVD burner for data back up would be great, Suggestions?
"Data" means any compressed format for media files right? like it'll still burn Mpegs for backup purposes?

And while we're on the subject do you know of any good freeware replacements for AnyDVD and DVDclone as my trial will eventually run out?

AnyDVD and CloneDVD are specialized applications strictly for copying DVD's.

This is why we push RETAIL boxed DVD burners. They come with software and are only a few bucks more than OEM.

Yeah it was my first build, and the fact that a couple of my component were OEM didn't really hit me until They were already ordered.

Do these programs come with a decrypter?

Those two programs in my review do not support DVD ripping, only burning to CDs/DVDs. But the two programs glc suggested will decrypt DVDs.

OK, so glc's suggestions will decrypt, rip, and burn?? For free?

No, Alaron was saying that AnyDVD and CloneDVD do that. His 2 programs are just burners.

CDfreaks it is then. And believe me I'm not just being lazy. Right now I'm reading like all of the "Tweakguides", and a bunch of other stuff probably totalling 500pages. Anything short of buying books, I'm doing. I'm not sleeping.

I'm pretty sure my question about DVD file format would be answered in a tutorial, but I'll ask anyway. What is the file conversion pathway for copying a DVD and/or playing it with playback software, then burning? What are ISO/UDF files? Is it ever an MPEG?

If you could give me a quick and dirty DVD------>DVD file/ISOUDF------>DVD backup copy?? Playback format?

I really appreciate your help. I'm trying to be as selective as I can about the things I come and whine to you guys about.

If you are going to be backing up a bunch of DVD's, you might as well buy AnyDVD and CloneDVD. This is the simplest way of doing it. They are the best programs out there to do this. As you can see, the freebies are nowhere as easy to use.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, although DVDclone2 is expensive. It would be nice to just buy AnyDVD, and using freeware ripping and burning, and I'm actually pretty sure that AnyDVD has a ripper. But now it's going to be really hard to go from DVDclone2 to the freeware. It is really nice to use.
