Getting into video editing

Yo, I wanna get into video editing but I'm not sure which software to use. I'm a beginner but I don't want a program that 'compiles a video for you' or sumthin like that; I wanna do my own work. Also, I'm not sure how to go about ripping dvd's, if you guys can help me with that too. Thanks!

Windows Movie Maker works pretty well for what it is. That's a good place to start before you buy a prosumer package.

Thanks for the tips! I haven't really tried much yet but I checked out Windows Movie Maker and it looks like it's not what I'm looking for. It automatically cuts videos into pieces which you then place into a 'storyboard' and like I said I wanna do my own work; is there any video editing software that has a cut and paste type interface or something along those lines?

avid is defenetly awsome, but for what your looking to do i think adobe premier is the best way to go. You can get an educational version with a college id.
Also it depends if your looking into compositing video as well as editing or u just need editing.
Adobe premier pro has alot of options, also its uses the sse instructions to have real time renders, you no longer need a 3rd party video card, the processor does the work now but u need i think atleat a p4 3.0 or an amd 64. Good luck
