Cannot reach 'secure' sites (?)
Hope its ok--I also posted this under Windows XP forum....
I recently uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2003. It was a bad uninstall, as I've heard others have experienced. Anyway, now that its off my laptop, I cannot get to sites like Hotmail, WellsFargo, Schwab.com, etc. Other unsecure sites like 'news' sites come in fine. I seemed to have a simular problem several years ago, and got good advice from this forum. I think it was called an "indexing" issue, or something like that. Can anyone tell me what to try to be able to use my computer normally again? Thanks so much! Bruce |

Hi BRVB,
You're going to have to do a cleanup of Norton's. There are instructions on their site for that : http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01090510510636 If you want to do the whole thing manually, besides cursing Norton's for making the uninstall such a pain, you're going to have to go through your Programs folder to remove anything that remains and use Explorer (show hidden files) to get the rest. Then run the registry cleaner of your choice. I'm not sure what you mean by "indexing".

Thanks for the reply Pam...
I've removed most all traces of Norton I could find. I cannot even download the removal tool from the Symantec web site. (Should had removed it like that in the first place, but its my daughters computer, and she's in college* & she didn't know about it.) I don't know why, cuz Symantec shouldn't be considered a 'secure' site. It just won't download the removal tool, but I don't know now if thats even an issue. Whats left of Norton, probably isn't the problem. How can I restore the computers normal internet access to all sites?? Thanks and hope for more help on th is one!! Bruce I had a problem like this on another computer a long while back, and someone knew what I had to do to fix it, and it worked ! Thanks for anymore tips---I know this is an easy fix, but I don't know it* Bruce |

If your daughter has a recent Restore point you should try that first.
If she doesn't or it doesn't work then this is a fix for the internet problems uninstalling Norton's software can cause : http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;812335 Be sure and back up the registry before you start. If that doesn't work you can try repairing Internet Explorer. The instructions for doing so are here : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378 |
