Windows DEP is blocking me.

I recently installed a game on my pc, but when I went to play it I got a message on the screen that says that windows DEP (data execution prevention) has blocked access to the program. I've tried changing the settings, but no matter what I do the program still won't run. any help?

Have you tried contacting SUPPORT for your game, to see if there are any patches, or if they can help you?

Here is a detailed description of DEP along with how to disable it for the whole computer or, selectively, by program.
Games don't, usually, cause it to kick into action so what is it you've installed?

1. Goto Control Panel and double-click System Properties.

2. Select the Advanced Tab.

3. Under Performance, click Settings.

4. When you get to Performance Options select the Data Execution Prevention Tab.

5. Add xxx.exe to the exclusion list for DEP (Data Execution Prevention) where xxx.exe is the name of the game launcher. You will actually have to browse the full tree address.

I had this problem when I 1st started playing a game called Rappelz. Also check online forums for the game if you can't find out what the launcher exe is.

Ok I put the executable file (stronghold2.exe) on the exclusion list, but DEP still won't let me play it. I've tried numerous other files, but what I find is that when I select the box for that file to be excluded and then click apply, ok, and then close the system properties. When I open system properties the boxes aren't checked anymore.

Also what would be the risk of shutting down DEP for the entire system. Will I really make my computer vulnerable if I do so?

It may not be the executable for the game that is the problem. It may also be a seperate launcher exe or if Stronghold uses some kind of hack prevention program it may be the executable for that. I only had to do this for 1 game online. Luckily there was a thread of the official forums telling us exactly which exe to manually allow.

Here is the tech forum for that game : http://stronghold.heavengames.com/cg...action=t&fn=26

Start up problems are really common, they used SecuRom, also there's a patch out for the game.
Have you downloaded and installed it?
