I am not certain what the svchost.exe entry is. It is listed among the "processes". How do I know which of these processes are necessary to keep open? There are about 100 running all the time on my computer and the computer seems to run slower than it should. Can this be the cause?

Just curious, but do you really have 100 of those services running? A more typical number would be somewhere between five and eight.
