Tweakui Alternative

Is there a Tweakui-like software that has features that will enable me to disable Windows XP's START button and disable right clicks? I could opt to adjust the registry myself but I'm not too confident with registries.

I would also like to have the registry modification that will be made to be restored everytime I need to have full access when I need to perform maintainance and repairs to the computers.

Does such a software exist?

I've never used it, but you might want to check out:

I use their Diagnose utility and find it handy.

I have used FreshUI, in fact I reviewed all of FreshDevices' programs for the FreewareFrenzy. Here is the direct link: http://www.pcmech.com/article/fresh-devices/

In short, FreshUI was dissappointing. But its worth a look if you're in the market for that kind of app.

Why are you trying to lock people out of the start button and right clicks? If these are work terminals or display computers, there may be other options.

I'm only going to use the computers as POS machines. It will be quite a hassle if they screw up the settings when they get too adventurous.

Actually, I thought of making the POS software go full screen so they'll have a tougher time minimizing it unless they know how to winkey+d. That is where locking up the start button and disabling right clicks comes in handy.

Unfortunately, the problem now lies in returning it back to normal as to not lock myself out when I need to do some fixing. That is where the tweakui alternative comes in. A manual registry modification feels too risky for me.

I'll try FreshUI.

Cool

Dirty...oh-so-dirty trick I pulled on my friend one time ...

I print screened his entire desktop one time and I posted that picture as his wallpaper. Then I hid his icons, folders, start button and everything else. Comes in the next day and wonders what the hell happened to his computer. Lol! The expression was priceless ...

The group policy editor (START > RUN > gpedit.msc ) handles a lot of these features without having to resort to 3rd party software. For example in Group Policy
Local Computer Policy > User Config > Admin Templates > Windows Explorer has a setting to turn off Windows + X hotkeys
Local Computer Policy > User Config > Admin Templates > Desktop has a setting to Hide and Disable all items from the desktop

There are ton of really useful settings that you should take the time to browse.. like Local Computer Policy > User config > Admin templates > System has a setting that allows you to allow only very specific applications to be run etc.

You can then use your admin account to go back to gpedit and re-enable everything that you locked down quite easily.
