WORD file scrambled

I was try to save a an office word document on windows xp when scrambled which was a really ****ty thing to happen. Many passages were replaced with lines of character sized squares and big spaces had formed between sections of text. Basically everything of value was lost and I cannot get it back. I tried previous saved versions in the recycle bin but they're all thye same as the last copy I saved. This truly tragic and no doubt unoriginal tale but please is there anything I can do.

Depending on the version of Word you can try doing a repair on the file. If I remember the repair option was in Office XP and above. I think that you use explorer to find the file, right-click on it and choose repair.

There are also plenty of programs that you can download that might do this as well.
