Can't open info on CDRW
My HDD recently began to fail and I burned a bunch of files onto CDRWs, including all of my music, word files, and pictures. I built a new computer and have tried to copy those files from the CDRWs I copied the files onto. None of the files will open, or play on the new computer.
The old computer had windows XP with SP2 and I used a CD burner with Nero to burn them. The new computer is windows Vista with a DVD burner. Can anyone tell me how I can recover my info? I will loose alot of music and a bunch of family pics we have collected over a 9 year period! |

When you cancel out of autoplay and use Explorer to look at the cd what do you see?
You closed the cd-rw disks, right ?

If burned right, you should have no problems. So, the hard drive was failing... were you able to open these files on the old HD? Also, did you "Verify" your burn afterward to may sure the burn was successful? Did you test the disks when finished? If not, you may have a invalid files or a bad burn
![]() When you say "burned them" do you mean you used InCD for the RWs?? No finalization is required as InCD takes care of it. Or do you mean you used Nero Burning ROM? That's really only for CD-R media and then you'd have to close / finalize the disk. |

I see all of the files, but when I try to play, or open them it says something about the codec being wrong, or bad. I was sure I closed them out, just like I had done in the past. I used Nero burn program. I followed the same proceedures as I did in the past with CDs. Is it different for CDRWs. If so, is there something I can do to recover the info?

Please give us the exact error message and the file types involved.
You may need nothing more than a codec pack or we might have to get serious and haul out ISObuster. |

Audio files say, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

On the pics it says, "Photo Gallery can't open this picture or video. This format is not supported, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Gallery."

The problem isn't the files then it's Windows Media Player in Vista.
Go into Tools and make sure download codecs is checked. |

I know that when I have burned DVD's CD-R's and CD-RW's if you don't close them, they may not even read at all on other machines or devices unless you close the disk before you burn, that may be your issue.

Are CODECS the same as PLUGINS? I don't have the option under tools for download codecs.

In Windows Media Player 11 it goes like this. Tools>Options (not plug ins)>Player (that's the tab you want) and the window is Automatic Updates. You have to tell WMP11 to check for updates and to download codecs. From your description yours isn't doing either. |
