Visual basic.

Im starting college this year, and am doing Computing. I spoke to one of the guys up there and he said they do everything in visual basic.

i want to get ahead as soon as possible really with programming languages, so i dont end up learning in the very little amount of spare time between friends, music, college, work, and coursework.

Whats the most efficient way to learn? Any books to recommend?

Thanks a bunch.

Do you have any experience with programming?

If not, I would concentrate on books or tutorials that deal with the logic first. Once you understand the logic of programing, especially in OO, you can pretty much learn almost any language as the only thing that really changes is the syntext.

There an tons of book on the subject and plenty more online resources. Try your library or do some internet searches. Sorry I don't have anything in particular for you to look at.

I don't know if this will work over seas but Apples iTunes, the USA store, has a series of free university lecture courses, iTunesU.
The lecture course you might want to check out is Digital Logic. It's a first year series from Michigan Tech, School of Computer & Electrical Engineering, 25 lectures ending with the final exam review.
It's likely they have a reading list as well.

edit : Here are two widely used books in the US available in the UK as well : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Visual-Basic...7811367&sr=1-2

You may have to know it but it shouldn't be the only programming language you know.

Learning by doing is the best way. Get yourself the latest Version of Microsoft MSDN Library, which contains a lot of useful documentation. Also available online:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/default.aspx

If you never have done programming in your life you start with a book and lots of reading first, so you understand programming - only then start learning a programming language like Visual Basic.

On Amazon you will find a lot of good books for beginners like these:
http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Prog...8219840&sr=8-1
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-C-Pr...8219800&sr=8-1
