MSN messenger sound

I'm using XP Pro but I don't have Windows Media Player installed.
I don't get any sounds with MSN Messenger (alert sounds, I haven't tried making calls with it).
Am I right in thinking that the lack of WMP is the reason for no alert sounds?
Can I somehow make it use VLC to generate sounds?

I don't think that it's WMP that's causing the sound problems. Are the sound files in the right place?

Control Panel->Sounds->Sounds tab->scroll down to the Windows Messenger section.

I believe it's a European version of XP that comes without WMP.
I may have used this command: "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove" to get rid of Windows Messenger (I can't remember) but now I've installed MSN Messenger and I don't get alert sounds so if I don't see a flashing window in my application bar, I don't know I've received a message.

I don't have a section for Windows Messenger in my "control panel> sounds" box

Send a message via MSN to RowanSpry
In MSN, try going through Options > Alerts and Sounds, and see if the right things are checked in there.

Please check the Options. Maybe the sound files set for Windows Messenger got deleted or moved. Go to Tools > Options > Preferences > Sounds > Sounds. Then scroll down to Windows Messenger. Try to browse on the Windows Messenger Program Folder. Or try updating to Windows Live Messenger if nogo.

i don't have a Windows Messenger folder and i don't have the options in my control panel > sounds >sounds....
the settings are properly set in the tools option of msn messenger but when i test it, it doesn't play.
when i browse to the folder and open the sound files, vlc opens up and plays the sound.
