Programs can't find internet

Hello- I have a notebook running XP and I just did a Windows repair. Now programs like Office, McAfee, iTunes, etc, pop up and say they are unable to find a connection to the internet, or check your internet connections, etc. BUT, Firefox, Explorer, Windows update connect just fine. Windows firewall is turned off. I have a direct LAN connection, no proxies. It seems like any program that tries to check for updates won't work. Please help !

You sure you don't have a 3rd party firewall running?

maybe

one theory I have is that some remnant of McAfee survived the registry crash that I used Windows to repair. when I try to re-install McAfee it tells me it can't find the internet. why would it still let the browsers connect?

got it

found an un-installer program on the McAfee site that cleaned out remnants of the McAfee program left from the crash. that fixed it... it's all good... everything is working again... thank God

McCrappee strikes again.

AVG Free antivirus and the Windows firewall are adequate protection that doesn't cause issues like this.
