Equation Editors

Hello all,

It's hard to type up notes when I don't have the required symbols to write up the equation. For example, when a chemical equation is said to be in equilibrium, there is an arrow pointing from from reactants to the products, and another pointing from the products to the reactants.

Does anyone know of a free package I can install to get these special symbols? Hopefully there is one for OpenOffice as I use that on my MacBook (where I type my notes). However if you know of one for MS Office let me know as well.

Thanks!
Brandon

Haven't a clue about a Mac, but Windows does have the character map.

in MS office, you can insert a symbol (insert>symbol) and you have all kinds of symbols available, including the arrow. office 2007 also has an insert>equation option which is not bad at all.

Are you using OpenOffice on a Mac or the NeoOffice branch? Not sure if there is really a difference, but the following is from NeoOffice:

For math equations (just to make things pretty) you can use the equation editor. Go Insert Menu>Object>Formula. You then have a pallet with all the different sort of math formatting. Doesn't look as nice as the one in Word, but it certainly works.

For general symbols/characters you can do one of two things I believe. In OpenOffice/NeoOffice go to Insert>Special Character. These are just like in Word, with either the same of very similar categories of symbols.

Otherwise you can go (when the finder is "selected") to the Edit Menu>Special Characters. This menu is also available when using something like Camino, but for some reason it isn't present in NeoOffice.

Hope that helps.

MS Word has an equation editor hidden away.

Maybe a little more work than you want to do, but LaTeX is a pretty robust typesetting markup language with good equation functionality:

I've used the one Force Flow linked to... it's a bit cumbersome, but better than nothing. The other one I used was called something like Fast Formula P...?? Can't remember, would have to start up my laptop and dig around, but it was pretty good too

LaTeX, as tfh mentioned, is a very versatile software that a lot of the professors and lecturers around here use for their typing up worksheets. It does have quite a learning curve though. In addition, for Word 2007, the equation editor is substantially improved - less buggy than it was in 2003.

Take a look at MathCast. It's free and creates equations that can be used in both MS Word and Open Office:
