Burning Ultimate Boot CD

Hi folks, the ignoramus is back. Is there a cheap, or free way to burn this CD? I am running XP Home SP 3 with latest updates. I am not good at this stuff & at a complete loss. I downloaded the UBCD from MajorGeeks.com, unzipped it w/7-Zip & nothing I had would burn it. So I deleted it, came here to forums & searched for UBCD. Found a thread that showed how to do it with Nero 7. Had a Nero disc that came with an external DVD recorder it was version 6 & the steps didn't apply. Went to Nero home page & downloaded 7 but serial # was invalid afterrunning 7 to replace 6. So I deleted it & reloaded 6 from cd, went to Nero home page again & checked for updated version. They want $69+ for upgrade. No way yet! Can anyone guide someone who shouldn't be on a computer beyond surfing the web & playing Spider solitare. Thanks for ANY help RevCLB

Rev, inside the zip or the exe file is an .ISO (or image file). You need to select from Nero "Burn Image to Disc" and then select that .ISO file you extracted. I think "Burn Image" may be under the Backup menu within Nero. That should do the trick.

Can go directly to the horse mouth on the Ultimate Boot CD's website. They have tutorials on how to make the CD and to get the latest version.

Thanks to all of you for your help.
flanzig1, I went to the horses mouth which is where I went in the first place. They use mirror sites for download & I tried a different one & got the same results as in post # 4. Tried an .exe download rather than zip but it still needed unzipped with results stated. I'm doing something wrong but can't figure it out. The website offers a CD for six bucks so I'm just gonna buy the darn thing. I'm hopeless in some areas & am tired of fooling with it.

Thanks again to all of your help. RevCLB

Nero Express 6 can do it just fine.

Download the zip, unzip it, and put the .iso file where you can find it. Open Nero Express, choose Disk Image or Saved Project, and browse to the ISO.

Hi glc, each time I have downloaded this I have saved it to My Documents. After unzipping, the .iso shows up in My Documents. Should I put it somewhere else. Each time I have got the same results as in post #4. Thank you all a lot.

What happens when you open it in the described fashion in Nero? Do you get the Burn option? What happens when you burn it?

Re-installed Nero. Could not find Disk Image or Saved Project. Stumbled through stuff & got same results as post #4. Feel really incompetent but Ain't gonna play No More. Will just buy the disk. Thanks again a million for all the help. RevCLB

Nero Express interface - it's the last item in the list, underneath Copy Entire Disk. Don't use Start Smart - open Nero Express directly from the start menu shortcut.

The shortcut is labeled Start Smart. I have an entry in All programs under Nero OEM that is just Nero Expeess. Is this what you are refering to? Thanks bunches.

Tried what glc suggested in post #11. Seemed to work til it got stuck on 33% download after 40 minutes. Stopped & started over, machine got screwy & I stopped it again. Used a program that was included w/XP called PC Doctor to check hard drive & cd drive. Hard drive passed but CD failed sound & read/write test. Got mad & stupid & did system recovery, lost everything & had to start over. Swapped a CD unit that I salvaged from another computer, ran the same test & got the same results. Mad & stupid did System recovery again.

I am asking if a new DVD/CD unit installed in the case will work with my machine? The reason I ask is that I have a Sony external DVD/CD unit but it only works with a minimum Pentium 3. All I have is a dinkey Celeron 2.7Gig.

Need to keep this system going as long as I can because I have a couple of daughters who are back in college & MAY need financial help. Any help will be valued

You are trying to use an external burner? Sounds like you may have USB issues. Buy an internal burner.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106079

It comes with Nero 7 Essentials. Uninstall all existing burning software, shut down, remove the existing internal optical, note the jumper setting, jumper the burner the same way, hook it up, boot it up, go into the properties of the IDE controllers and set all channels to DMA if available, reboot, install the software, and go to town.

A 2.7 Celeron is worlds ahead of a P-3.

PC Doctor is not part of XP, it's part of the preinstalled crapware on name brand computers. Sounds like you are a candidate for PC Decrapifier.

Wish I knew. Didn't record model # anywhere. Just remember the picture of it & it was different than the one offered by newegg now. After reading 33 reviews of the unit I'm gonna get it. But have to wait til next month now. It does come with software which I wondered about.

Do you want the IDE to USB, IDE to USB and Firewire, or the SATA to eSATA and USB housing? All 3 come with OEM Acronis True Image.

Need the IDE to USB right now. Just have a HP a305w using since Feb, 2004. Salvaged another 40gig drive from an old HP xt919. Since the Apricorn software covers it all I can swap to bigger & better when I can afford to build my new machine

I'm back, a bitching & whiney old man. I got the Liteon DVD writer recommended but got mad trying to install & walked away for a month. Installed it today. It plays cd audible & cd visual just fine. It won't play DVD's. Tried MS setup wizaed & the drive was already listed as accepted. Tried device manager & no luck. Went to Liteon website & got over 13 pages of stuff with 1 page that said that they couldn't help, send e-mail & they might get back to me in a few days.

I don't understand about the jumper setting. I didn't look when I took the old cd drive out & don't know the proper setting.

In fact, I don't understand anything you sais in that paragraph. Sorry, I'm a Dummy!

Hey, Rev. First of all, did you uninstall all of the old burning software (Nero, Roxio, or whatever)? Then shut down and unplug the new drive from the ribbon cable and restart. Shut down again to install the drive so we're starting from scratch.

There are little jumper pins on the back of the drive, maybe two rows of three or four pins each. Two of them will be connected with a plastic jumper. Either on the drive above the pins or in the manual, it will label each pair of pins: MA (Master), SL (Slave), or CS (Cable Select).

IF the drive is to be connected to the end of the ribbon cable, put the jumper on MA. If the drive is to be connected to the middle of the ribbon, place the jumper to SL. You're better off placing the DVD-RW drive in the Master position, and having nothing else plugged into that ribbon if possible. If there is, make sure that drive is jumpered correctly to Slave, then.

In Device Manager, under IDE Controllers you can select Properties of each to set all to "DMA if available." Reboot and reinstall Nero. Did the drive also come with a DVD software player, like PowerDVD or something?

Thanks Kov-Ice. The Nero 7 program would not install so there is none to delete. I have a program called Total Recorder for making music. Would this cause a conflict?

After reading umpteen times I think I understand the: Shut down, unplug, restart. Shut down install drive again. Am kinda slow on this stuff. The drive has it's own IDE cable so will check jumper. Don't know about DVD software player. The 1 disc said Nero essentials but it wouldn't work so don't know what else is on it. Thanks again

Hi glc, I put the disc in drive & it started, stopped & restarted several times before showing screen. After that it just sat & wouldn't install. I still haven't done the steps Kov-Ice suggested to me. Lower back bothering me. Will do the stuff & retry. Thanks for your help.

Thanks glc & Kov-Ice. Think this is up & running ok now. Finally made it through the steps that Kov_Ice laid out. that was a trip for ME!

Was almost ready to rip the unit out, smash it & send it back because the Nero 7 program wouldn't load. Went throught all sorts of contortions. Then decided, what the heck, tried an older Nero 6 disc & zip-boom-bang. Everything seems to be running fine now. But if I have a problem I will come sniveling back. LOL Thanks again. RevCLB
