Moving bookmarks into Firefox

Running XP
An old hard drive crashed and the new one used a different cable setup that wouldn't allow me to connect the OHD and clone it to the new one. I was reduced to saving data files to a CD and then copying them to the new system.

One of the files that I copied was my bookmarks file. I would like to import it to Firefox but when I use FF's BM manager to import the file, I can't get it to just import the whole thing. The FF BMM wants to import the files (each URL) individually!

What am I doing wrong here? Surely there's a way to just import the whole file.

Thanks,
John

To import, Go to Book mark manager, Click FILE IMPORT Then check the FROM FILE radio button. From there browse to you bookmark file and import it.

That is precisely what I did.

I thought that I explained that in my post. What's happening is the file name does not show up in the box until I open an individual bookmark. FF seems to want me to import every URL individually.

Let me rephrase.
I have a "folder" of bookmark files. When I am in FF BMM, import, from file, and I browse to the folder, The "file name" block only shows something to import if I select an individual file. When I select the folder name, nothing shows up in the "file name " block.

It sounds like you didn't export your bookmarks to a file...

If you don't have a "bookmarks.html" file you have a problem.

What TR just said.

Open the bookmark manager, click on File, and instead of Import, select Export. The default name is "bookmarks.html" as glc mentions

Lespaul,
When I paste in the path from your post, I get a message saying that the file is unavailable.. with a white X on a red circle.

Your Firefox bookmarks are all stored in a single file named "bookmarks.html" - and you need to get that file off the old drive or off your backups in order to import into a new installation.

As an aside: you can name the Export whatever you want. I do periodic Exports for a "just in case." I name them Bookmakrs + the day.html, so if I backed up today, it would look like:

BookMarks-Firefox-11-4-07.html

Then you can save them at a different location if you'd like.

I would just browse to the location so you are getting into the right users folder. You might have to 'show hidden files' in the folder view options to see the App data folder. This is assuming you saved the Users document and settings folder.
