Outlook 2003 trying to send mail

Outlook 2003 is correctly set up and functioning to receive and send from my PC, XP Pro laptop. I have an old Yahoo e mail account which has POP3 feature. As soon as I moved this Yahoo to Outlook 2003 again (I answered it on www.yahoo.com for a few months, using Outlook 2003 for two other e mail addresses), the SEND/RECEIVE button is resulting in a " sending message 1 of 19 ".

None of these 19 messages are within Outlook's Outbox. I cannot see any messages at all which are still to be sent, but every single time Outlook checks the mail this phantom sending occurs. Eventually, it seems to time out each time, and the error message from Outlook is inevitably the " Server timed out ". Before that happens, however, each of the recent e mails, sent and received, are sent and received perfectly. It sends everything recent, and receives everything recent. The old " phantom " e mails are never sent.

After each sending attempt, the recent e mails are sent and received correctly. It is the old e mails, quantity 19, which are not sent. The error message comes up after those 19 fail each time.

How can I find these 19 phantom e mails? Can I review them before deleting them?

I have thousands of e mails stored within Outlook 2003, so re installing Outlook would be a risk and a potential problem. I do not plan to move away from Outlook 2003.

Many thanks, glc. I am busy backing up the Outlook pst file, which has thus far taken almost 30 minutes. I will finish this project when the back up is finished and report back.

Clearly, these people had precisely the same problem as mine.
