Using a word document on 4 machines at the same time.

I’m wondering if there’s a way you can open the same word document on 4 machines at the same time, one of the guys at work reckons he’s seen this done at one of our others branches. It’s something that seems impossible to me, especially when it comes to saving the document.

We have reports to do on approx 8 people we split these between 4 of us so we have 2 people each to write about. In the past we have had 8 separate documents then we have to somehow join them together somehow. This can be a bit of a task.

At least up to 0ffice 2003 you can't have multiple users in a Word doc at the same time (I haven't looked into it in 2007 yet). With Excel files it is possible.

You want to use 'Track Changes' features - you can distribute the file and then at the end of the day have Word compare their differences and eventually merge them. Depending on the complexity of the document it works reasonably well.
