Office 2003 KB943985 & Error code 779
I am having a problem installing KB943985 v2 for Office 2003. I keep getting an "error code 779" about half way through the install. I Googled both the KB number and error code. The only solution that is mentioned was to close the AV and any third party firewalls and try again. Still no luck. Any other suggestions ?

pam123--Thanks for the reply. I do not know how to give you a link. When I do START / WINDOWS UPDATE. It finds three updates. HOLD EM POKER, WINDOWS DREAMSCENE, and SECURITY UPDATE FOR MICROSOFT OFFICE EXCEL 2003 (KB943985) v2. I probably misinformed you by not adding EXCEL. Hope this helps. Maybe this is it.

Have you got the latest service pack for Office 2003 installed ?
Hit Ctrl>Alt>Del and take a look at what's running before you try the install. It's not just 3rd party firewalls or AV that can block updates, pop-up blockers and anti-spyware will also block so check and see what's running on your rig. I would, if you haven't already, save a new download to the computer. |

pam123-- Yes I do have all the latest updates for Office including SP3. I also did that Control / Alt / Delete. I have nothing under the APPLICATION tab, and 47 items under the
PROCESSES tab. I will keep trying every few days. Can I download and install that update in SAFE mode ?? Thanks, Mike |

pam123---I followed your instructions. Downloaded the update to the desktop, shutdown the computer and restarted in safe mode. clicked on the icon on the desktop to install. It seemed to install, but I got a message "THE UPDATE CANNOT BE APPLIED" so I just rebooted thinking it would be applied with a regular startup. Then I went into Start / Settings / Control Panel / Programs etc. and choose to see the UPDATES. Under the Office category, I did see KB943985 listed so I thought all was well. Just to satisfy myself, I did the Windows Update thing again. To my surprise, it found KB943985 again to download and install. I then went back to the Control Panel / Programs / Updates to see if I did not look correctly the first time. I did see the KB943985 item, and I also noticed that it WAS installed on March 15. so it looks like it has been installed. But then the question is -- why does it keep finding KB943985 as a critical update that I need to download and install ?? Many thanks again, pam123.

Un-install it, if necessary use this : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301,
and then download and install again, preferably in safe mode. |

Hi pam123 -- I downloaded that program, however when I opened it I did not see KB943985.I saw Office 2003, Adobe, and several others. Then I went to that Control Panel / Programs and found KB943985 and right clicked on it. I got a popup for UNINSTALL., so I left clicked on it. Part way through the uninstall it asked me to insert the Office 2003 disc which I did. Then it uninstalled. This was good, I thought. Then I rebooted to safe mode and tried to install that update again, no luck. Got the same message about not being able to APPLY THE UPDATE. I tried the regular Windows Update. It said I neeeded KB943985, but again it would not install. Went back to the desktop, where the icon for the update was and clicked on it. It started to install but then I got a different message. "ERROR 1913 SETUP CANNOT UPDATE FILE C:\ WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MAPISVC.INF. VERIFY THE FILE EXISTS & YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO UPDATE IT. Maybe I should just remove Office Prof. 2003 completely, and re-install. Or do you think I will just end up back where I am now ? Many thanks again for your help.

You're having a UAC problem then.
It's possible this might work for you even if the situation is not exactly the same : http://www.vistahelp.ca/phpBB2/viewt...6f4b1564123f6c |

PAM123 -- I could not rename that mapisvc.inf file as the instructions on that link you gave me said. , and I tried with UAC on and off. However I was reading about needing permissions etc. I right clicked on that file and chose Properties, security tab, advanced, (not exactly sure) but eventually I saw GROUP OR USER NAME: under that were four items. System ,Administrator(Mike-pc\admin), Users (Mike-pc\user), and Trusted installer. Only Trusted installer had FULL CONTROL. The other three only had read / execute . Somehow, I gave FULL control to the last three, and Trusted installer changed to read / execute. It took several tries with UAC on and then off. As I said, I probably could not repeat the process. But anyway--I then tried to install that update that I still had on the desktop, and it installed properly. I finally got a message that said, Update was applied, or something like that. I then did the Windows Update, and this time, it did NOT find KB943985 . Success at last. Thank you for continuing to search for a solution for me. Much appreciated. Mike

Now we just have to figure out what happened. Thanks, I think
