For favorites, just copy the entire favorites folder from your xp computer and copy them to the favorites folder under your user name in windows.

For email: http://www.freebits.co.uk/backoutlook.html

Hopefully that helps.

export email addresses to a file somewhere, export the favorites to a file somewhere, trace down you inbox location. Then burn the stuff.
Copy the messages from the CD to the right location, they will overwrite the existing empty boxes, then import your email address and browser favorites from the Cd.

Actually if you are using a CD, copy everything to a folder on the hard drive first and remove the read-only attributes. I prefer a USB flash key to a CD these days.

Agree in principle with both GLC, I copy mine to backup then burn to CD from there. But with burn capability you have the backup for a while for a cost of $.19 rather than tying up the flash, which costs more. Personal choice, in both cases.

Thanks, I saw that but without a flash key I thought there might be way with a cable to the USB ports.

It’s also possible to buy a dedicated USB transfer cable, which links both PCs together physically. The cable itself is specially designed for data transfer, so you can’t just use any USB cable, and it requires special software to work – both PCmover and Windows Easy Transfer work with the necessary cable. Helpfully, Laplink is currently giving away a free USB1.1 cable with all purchases of PCmover.

The problem with this is that by the time you buy the software you could have gotten a basic usb key and a flash card of 1 or 2 GB to put in it for less.
This is one time when somethng like an Ezonics portable usb read/write (It was on sale at newegg for about $7 the last time I looked) and an SD card (Whatever a local store has or newegg may be having another one of those by portable get SD card free deals) is your best bet.

If you have a router already you can set up LAN to do the transfer with ethernet cables but if you don't, and you're not planning a home network, that just isn't worth the expense.

Ah! I DO have a LAN and ethernet cabling. Now all I have to do is to figure out how to do it. Thanks. And ANY suggestions will be helpful as I'm not proficient in file sharing etc.

edit : Here's the link for XP : http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...bott_fstw.mspx

Here's a deal -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820609011

4 gig flash drive for $9.99, FREE shipping. No tax unless you are in CA, TN, NJ, or NY. I see you are in CA, so add 7.75%.

A flash drive is something everyone should have these days. For less than 11 bucks it's a lot simpler than setting up a network if you have no networking experience at all. You can store a LOT of backups, etc. on it.

Sure appreciate both posts and the help proferred.

I'll buy the flash drive if for no other reason the price and future utility.

I'm adding a new Dell computer which is enroute, and retiring my wife's Windows 98 machine. It will have XP Pro installed with a Vista future option. We have an old program on the 98 called MagTrack which helps reference magazine articles for physical access. I used it to track references in another hobby and she uses it to track recipes in multiple cooking magazines like Bon Apetit & Cooking Lightly, to which she subscribes. I had that program which is no longer available, on a Windows 95 machine originally. We want access to that information and it doesn't look like it can be installed in her new computer. The preference would be to just install the program on the new machine and get all the data into it but the program is on 5¼" floppy.

I do have the facility of connecting the 98 machine to the system, and the LAN concept might be best if I can get that machine to share the files. We're accessing data directly on that machine now but it would be connected to the LAN at a very remote room in the house making direct access very inconvenient. Any other suggestions? I DO appreciate both of you responding with help. Thanks.

You can install a 5.25" floppy in the new computer temporarily to get the program installed, Dell motherboards still have a floppy controller. Then you can set it to run in Windows 95 compatibility mode if it has problems running in XP.

EDIT:

Is this it?

http://thepcsweb.com/products/magtrack/

Looks like you can download it, and unlock it for $9.95. XP compatible.

What a resource you are!!! Thank you! That's it!!

Did try to buy the flash drive but they are out until 7/22 and not accepting back orders.

I'll be doing as I'm "told"! Thanks again!

The only problem you may have is finding a Windows 98 driver for that key. It's plug and play with ME/2K/XP/Vista. If you can't get it working, there are alternate ways to get files off the 98 machine.

Thanks, I may be back! I'm hopeful to solve it by downloading the program and then just inputting the data off a transfer medium of some sort. The LAN option I'm presuming is also another alternative though I've never 'shared' info off the 98 machine and don't even know what's in there to allow it or facilitate it. Wish I knew more! Truly appreciate your help and interest, I know it's far beneath you.
