Recovering Files

I was on another computer's shared drive and there was a mpg file that I didn't need so I opened it up to check it before I deleted it. While my the media player was opening up I wanted to watch another video so I highlighted it. After the file finished opening, I determined that I did want to delete it, so I pressed delete, then enter to confirm. BUT, I had forgotten the other important file was actually the file that was highlighted =(.

I wanted to ask if anyone knew how to recover this file because when you delete over a network, it doesn't go to any recycling bin. Please help, this is a very important file and it means a lot to me.

Please respond if you have any ideas at all!

I'm guessing I run recova on the computer where the file is located, not where I deleted it from?

EDIT: Please respond because the more I use the computer the more chance that it will be over written. This is a very special video to me because it is a clip of me on G4TV Attack of the Show and I don't think I have any backups and they just took the clip off their website which is the only place that has the video!

EDIT 2: Also, Recuva did not come up with the file, even though I just erased it!

I will try running Recuva on the computer I deleted it FROM, now.

Does anyone have a clue how I might be able to get this file back? Why does it automatically delete files over the network instead of sending it to some sort of recycling bin like users are used to?

There never has been a way to protect network drives with a recycle bin. The only protection you have is user awareness and backups. If Recuva can't find it, you may need stronger recovery software that isn't free.

I JUST deleted it, though and I haven't been using that computer at all. Don't you think Recuva should be able to find the file? Does anyone know of any stronger recovery software that is free?

Thank you!

Doing this might have over written the file...

Recova is one of the best....Might want to try:

PC INSPECTOR™ File Recovery 4.x is a data recovery program that supports the FAT 12/16/32 and NTFS file systems.

Thank you. And when I said that quote above what I mean is I will run recuva on the computer that the file is NOT stored on, but the computer I was using to access the network.

If you do that, you have to point it to the network drive if that's an option.

I just claim that "I don't know where the file is." so that it looks everywhere. Is this the right option?

Nope. If you do that it only looks on the local drives.

Might consider mapping a drive to the shared folder to see if that helps.
