By deleting explorer would it have any effect on Firefox?

Do you mean uninstalling IE? I don't think that's possible.

It is not possible to uninstall IE, it's part of the OS. It's very easy to make Firefox your default browser. There are few things that you absolutely must have IE for, one of which is Windows Update.
