Folder re-organization software?
I'm looking for some software that will do a fairly specialized task... If you don't want to read why, skip down to the bold, red text.
I've got a folder on my computer full of a good 10,000-20,000 photos. After years of just being a social snap photographer, I just stored all my photos in folders based on subject matter (animals, friends, road trips, etc). But now that, several years later I've moved on to more serious photography, I am now saving all my photos in folders named after the date they were taken and am relying on software like Picasa, Lightroom, or Aperture to organize my work for me with tags and such. The problem is about two thirds of my photos are organized via the old, insane method. So... What I need is is software that will analyze when certain files were created, and create folders based on those dates. Such as, say a picture (JPG) was taken (created) on September 10th, 2006, the program will create a folder named "09.10.06" or similar and move the file there. And it will do this for an entire directory of files that I specify. I hope someone knows of some software that will do such a thing. I'm not a programmer by any means, but it sounds like a fairly uncomplicated thing to do. Thanks in advance!

I don't know of software, but you could just put all the photos in one folder, and then organize by date. Select all the ones with the same date, and move them into a new folder.
A little tedious, but shouldn't take too long.

I thought about that, too, but I'd like to save that for a last resort. Because I have literally about 13,000 photos to organize, taken on probably a thousand or two different dates. Frankly, the two or three weeks I'd surrender to doing this myself could be much better spent.
![]() I figure there has to be some simple batch-editing software out there that could do this for me. I just wouldn't begin to know how to search for it, other than just asking people here. EDIT - After some more Googling, I was able to find this program: http://www.orange-carb.org/DateTree/ That program does EXACTLY what I'm looking for. The problem is that it's just made by some kid who had my problem and knew how to write programs for a Mac, so this program is only available FOR Macs. I unfortunately don't have any Macs at my disposal, nor want to buy an external hard drive just to temporarily port all my photos onto a Mac. Does anyone know of any programs that do exactly what DateTree does, but is made for PCs? Last edited by Sound Mind; 11-29-2008 at 09:00 PM. |
