Technically, yes, it is possible to install OS X on a normal PC - with the Mac conversion to the x86 ISA, the architecture is the same. However, you cannot install it on a PC because of the limitations that Apple put on their OS X disc. Note that additionally, the Mac OS X license disallows OS X to be installed on anything besides Apple Mac hardware.

To expand on Kram's reply; the company that tried to sell "cloned Mac's" is now being sued out of existence.

"Boot Camp" will allow you to put Windows on a MAC but there is no way, legally, to do it the other way around.

Last I read the company the case between Psystar (which sells cloned Macs) and Apple will go on trial on Nov 9, 2009. Both companies have a good argument, so most likely it will still take a while for a decision to be reached on whether Psystar is allowed to install Mac OS on PCs even after the trial begins. The validity of EULAs also hasn't been ruled on, so the question as to whether you can legally put Mac OS on a PC is in a grey area.

Having used Mac OS (9 series and X series), Windows (95,98/SE,Me, NT series, 2000 Pro, XP Pro/Home, Vista (all types)), Linux (Ubuntu (and derivatives), Solaris, Mandriva, Fedora, DSL), I can say that Mac OS has the least functionality, highest cost and least amount of user control. You can get an OEM version of XP or Vista for under $100 which gives you access to a high compatibility OS which has many features and programs (many of which are free), as well as a high amount of user control. Linux (newer versions) have in some cases surpassed Windows in terms of compatibility (you can get Linux for practically any computer system) as well as features and user control while in most cases costing $0. If one of the reasons you are taking a look at using Mac OS is because of the GUI, take a look at using Beryl, it is functional, has good asthetics and can be used on most newer versions of Linux and Windows.

Putting OS X involves software hacks and breaks the EULA.

The intial anti-trust claim psystar had against apple was shot down mid-november.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post...nst-apple.html

While I would like to see the OS freed from the platform, Apple probably doesn't see a good monetary or technical reason for it. They control the hardware, and thus, the drivers and software on top of it. If they opened up to the PC platform, that means they'd have to support a whole range of hardware they're not prepared to deal with.

If nearly all the computers in the world were apple hardware and apple software, they may have had a valid anti-trust claim. But as it is, the Apple market isn't a monopoly on computing, just like Casio or Texas Instruments doesn't control the calculator market, or Ford and Toyota don't control the automotive industry.
