I can't recommend a freebie from experience, but head over to http://www.videohelp.com/ and check out their list of tools. It's comprehensive stuff, with good user ratings feedback and forum support if needed.

How much RAM do you have? You may have the same problem with other software if you're running a bit light on memory.

WMM is actually the best of the bunch, in terms of free software. I've tried out a number of free editing products, and they're either extremely crippled or quite unstable.
So, your two opions are either bit the bullet and get a $50-$100 package, or try out some online video editors (broadband is quite necessary, uploads will take a while, and they're no guarantee these online services will still be online the following day)

Not sure if this is what you're looking for: http://www.dvdflick.net/
But I have used this, and it works well.

Note...that burns video files to playable DVDs...it isn't a video editor. But shadow does bring up a point in us making a few assumptions...what do you need the software to do exactly? |

Thanks for all the input. My son was asking me, I'm not sure what he's wanting to do. I think he just wanted to try something different. He's using an AMD 939 system with an Athlon64 3200+ and 1 gig of DDR400.
It was handling my video editing projects pretty well, but I haven't used it in a while now. My son was dictating to me, and wanted to add in the part about the freezing. I'm pretty sure it's bogged down due to spyware, but he still wants to try something else first. It most likely needs a nuke and pave.
