Unhappy video loading BSOD

Hi, I've seen a lot of threads on google but I couldn't find anything definitive that was helpful.

When i load .avi or .ogg files I get the Blue Screen before my system restarts, this only happens on specific video files so I would assume it's a codec or driver fail though I can't really tell.
I removed the system restart option in My Computer > Advanced to check for the error message but it doesn't indicate any specific error like most other forums have sudgested.

This seems to be a fairly common issue so I'm hoping someone can offer insight

Thanks
x

When you get the blue screen, you don't see a stop code?

If you do, please post.

I would start by trying to update your video drivers.

If that still doesn't work, try a different video player like vlc or jetaudio.

Is this xp?

Do you have the latest service pack?

Do you use Trend Micro by chance?

Do you have multiple monitors?

See if these apply: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957319

Do you use WMP to view these files? If so, try a different media player like vlc or jetaudio. See if it happens with them. If that fixes it, then look for a WMP update.

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3, I've never used Trend Micro and I don't have multiple monitors connected. I use WMP for some operations (Usualy Music) but for the bulk of my videos I will usualy use either MPC or VLC depending on file extension

I've already updated my graphics drivers (ATI 8.573) and I'm usualy pretty OCD about system security so I wouldn't put this error down to malware
