Unable to play DVD
Was given a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop e/w Win XP SP3.
Works good except Windows Media Player will not play dvd's, software displays the # 11 in "add / remove programs" This is the response under the Header when I try to play Windows Media Player Windows media player cannot play the dvd because a compatible dvd decoder is not installed on your computer. So I click on the "web help" option & am sent to this link http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...userlocale=409 which says "DVD Playback Options for Windows If you are running the Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, or Windows XP operating system on your computer, you might need to install a compatible DVD decoder (also known as a MPEG-2 decoder) before continuing with the following activities. * Playing a DVD * Playing a recorded TV show * Playing video files that were encoded with the MPEG-2 codec (.mpeg, .mpg, and some .avi files) To purchase a compatible DVD decoder, visit Plug-ins for Windows Media Player." Have tried the Toshiba website but the 6100 is no longer supported. In searching the web found cdfreaks.com that offers the following download software AVSMedia Coolsoft (Sweden)... CyberLink DivX Intervideo Anyone ever use such or can recommend something better? Thanks much |

The easiest thing to do is use VLC for playing your DVD's. It does not require any codecs, they are self-contained. VLC is open source, and free. I would use that LONG before I installed a questionable codec pack.

Would have responded earlier but am just now coming around after the dentist did some removal.
She asked me if I was one of those that had "hard teeth." So I asked her to explain that remark a bit more. She said; "You know, someone that I got to put my knee into the chest in order to get that molar out." Said yup, that's about what the last dentist had to do & he was a man. Now I'm beginning to think that she took it as a sexist remark as I feel the whoomp, whoomps. ![]() Appreciate your help, guys. Will look into it tomorrow. |

glc,
downloaded & dvd's now play. Thanks much. cocutzamisca, the VLC download is about a 1/3 of the size of the software that you recommend. However, I've bookmarked the link for possible future use. Thanks as well. |
