secure VPN connection

Hello all
Im looking for a good secure VPN sofeware to use. My friend was showing me how he used it to connect to his sisters system and could share C: drives , very nice. Also I was told its much better to connect to my server 2008 using a secure VPN other then using remote desktop sessions. if possible ( Any free ones )

Thanks

Windows built in Help File says:

Quote:
Virtual private network (VPN)

A network that connects one or more computers to a large network, such as a business network, using the Internet. A VPN is encrypted, so only authorized people have access to it.
So even with Windows built in version, you're working with encrypted info and requires a username/password to connect...

Approx how much more sucurity do you feel you need

So even without a VPN setup, if I just use remote desktop that's already secured by windows rite. I just want the peace of mind that people cant just walk in to my server and screw around.
I don't need government style security. Just enough so unwanted people cant connect.....

Remote Desktop requires a username/ password....If you select the "remember" option then yes - anyone can mess around.

I'm confused
I installed Hamachi with log me in that's a VPN network, but there's no options to see the other persons desktop. I can log on and see there files witch is nice. Is that mainly what a VPN is used for. Just for files.

A VPN is *NOT* a remote desktop. It lets you log into the server and access shares.

OOppsss...

VPN was originally intended for corporate and/or SMB use, not home networking ( my mistake I assumed you knew ) but its use is being expanded .

So description here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_private_network

Before you drop it though, how many "home" computers do you have and how extensive is the "media" collection ?

If it's just two computers are you using them to teach yourself and does your sister agree (After all it's her media collection as well.) ?
