Windows Media Player Removal

I have Windows Vista and I want to uninstall Windows Media Player... I seem to have a problem with it... When I watch videos, either downloaded or simply played from my files, my screen gets colored lines all across it and it freezes... Every once in a while it goes to the blue screen of death...

It all started after my laptop monitor broke and I had to send it into repair... They replaced it and I got it back but now I'm having this problem... I think it has something to do with Windows Media Player because that is the ONLY time it happens... I've used Zune player and VLC to see if they have the same problem but it is only Windows Media Player... I tried to reinstall it but it says that a newer version is installed so i want to uninstall it and then reinstall it... I just can't figure out how...

You can't. Just use an alternate player.

So I can't even revert it to a previous version if I didn't like using the new one? That blows...

The problem I'm having is that WMP is still opening on certain types of videos (not sure what they are yet) even though my other players are the default players and have all the file types associated with them...

If you can't uninstall it using add/remove programs, the only other shot is a system restore back to before you upgraded it.

To be honest its probably the easiest and safest bet to use another alternative media player as default. Although I cringe at the though, quicktime would probably function better. You might as well just change the file types default player to another one.

I prefer VLC. It doesn't require codecs and it's nice and compact.

Isn't WMP an integral part of the OS?
Isn't it not uninstallable?
It may not be an issue with WMP at all.
Could be a video card driver conflict.
Could be dirty optical drive.
We have no way of knowing this because we don't know anything about the system that you are using.
Some detailed specs would be nice.

I have been sitting here for twenty minutes trying to figure what this question is asking. I think my head is going to explode.

Microsoft has a cumulative update for WMP11 in Vista and that "view related" content box to the right may also help : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941651

Here's how to re-install it (More like a repair install) : http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4796790...yer-vista.html

And, if you want to go for broke, here is WMP 12 for Vista : http://www.techmixer.com/download-wi...-12-for-vista/

but, be warned, it's a work around so read through the steps carefully.

If all else fails there is VLC : http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Simply install VLC, let it become the default video player, and you will never see WMP again.
